Garden Photography Workshop

Join us and instructor Debra McPherson, adjunct professor at PCC’s Landscape Technology Program and Principle and Founder at Mahonia Design for this hands-on, information packed workshop: "Every Picture Tells a Story: How to Photograph Your Installed Designs Using your Smartphone"

Topics covered in this workshop will include:

  • Using observation and critical thinking to "Tell a Story"

  • Leveraging simple technology available on your smartphone

  • Tips on preparing your site

  • Timing and lighting for ideal results

  • Composition and design principles

  • Framing a broad view and creating compelling close-up plant vignettes

  • Compensating for sites that are not picture-perfect

  • Low-cost apps and tips for photo editing

This workshop will be held both inside and outside, with access to two types of sites for photography practice: a garden with recently installed plants and a mature garden that has been featured in local garden tours and a photography book. After the instruction, you will have an opportunity to practice what you have learned by taking photos in these gardens and sharing them with our instructor for feedback. Handouts will be provided with instruction. Snacks and sparkling water will be provided.
